Preparing for your move
You will need to plan for your move to Australia. When preparing, you should consider the following:
Temporary accommodation
Arrange temporary accommodation before you arrive so you have a place to stay. This will give you time to find long-term housing, which may take some time.
Transport
Plan how you will travel from the airport to your accommodation. You can use public transport or other services such as taxis or car rentals.
You can find more information about transport options for each airport on the relevant airport website:
Documents
Make sure you have all your documents ready before travelling.
You should bring:
- your passport
- your visa
- any medical documents, like prescriptions or immunisation records
- original certificates of your qualifications
- your driver’s licence
- character reference letters for rental applications.
Is there anything you cannot bring to Australia?
Australia has strict rules about what you can and cannot bring into the country. Certain food, plant material and animal items from overseas could introduce serious pests and diseases into Australia, and could risk devastating agriculture and tourism industries and Australia’s unique environment.
There are some things you are allowed to bring, but you need to let border force officers know you are bringing it. This is called “declaring it”.
You must declare if you are carrying certain food, plant material or animal items. You can take these declared goods with you to the clearance point at the airport where they will be assessed by a biosecurity officer and may be inspected. Alternatively, you can voluntarily dispose of food, plant material or animal items in bins located in the terminal before undergoing biosecurity screening.
You can check the Australian Border Force website to see what you can bring, cannot bring and need to declare.
